CHARACTER ANALYSIS OF SHAMMI FROM KUMBALANGI NIGHTS.
Kumbalangi Nights is a Malayalam language film which was directed by Madhu .C. Narayanan and was released on 7 February 2019. The role played by Fahad Fazil named ‘Shammi’ in the movie Kumbalangi Nights have attained wide spread attention from the audience. Shammi is a mysterious and Strange character. He can be said as one of the iconic figures of the patriarchal society.
The physical features of Shammi gives a clear cut idea that he belongs to middle class family. He have a thick moustache and he is clean shaved. He wears out a gold chain in his neck. Shammi dresses out in neat and clear manner. When we looks at Shammi’s behaviour we can find out that he has a Narcissist Personality Disorder. This disorder is commonly found in men than in women. People having this disorder has an inflated sense of self importance. This condition can be not cured as it is involved through combination of genetic and environmental factors.
In the introduction scenario of Shammi we can see that he is shaping his moustache. In Indian society men having moustache is considered as masculine and people are conscious to have thick moustache and beard to show that they are masculine and thus dominators . This patriarchal behaviour is found in the character Shammi also. While adjusting his moustache and admiring his own beauty Shammi sees out a red bindi stuck in mirror he just wash it out and in a deep voice he says out that “Reymond the complete man”. People having Narcissistic Personality Disorder often admire themselves and they tend to keep themselves above all.
When a character Shiju comes he warns them casually that Shammy is somewhat peculiar and he hands out one plate and tells Simi and Baby Mole that Shammi only eats in that plate. This depicts that Shammi has some kind of problem. When Simi and Shammi went through a casual talk he was keeping an eye contact with Simi and when a ball hits his bike Shammi’s romantic look changes out to be serious and it is evident in his face.
Shammi wants to be the dominator of the family. Shammi along with Simi’s family went to a feast at simi’s cousins house. Simi’s uncle love to cook and he advice Shammy and tells him that Shammy and simi’s uncle is same kind of birds with same feathers. Then after a smile Shammy tells that he is not like Simi’s uncle and Shammy adds that he have a decent job as well as he is not like the uncle who does kitchen works. From it is evident that Shammy is one among the patriarchal society that tends to think that kitchen is the place for women only.
People having Narcissistic Personality Disorder always tries to hide there original behaviour under a mask. They want everyone to praise them. They are dominators and love to suppress others thoughts. When Baby Mole and Simi were sharing personal affairs Shammy peeks from the door and ask them on what they were talking about inspite they told it was personal. He was afraid that they were talking about
Shammi so he ask them that weather it was about himself. Shammy is enjoying his position in his family. His mother in law loves him and Shammy also respects her in order to protect his mask and to attain love from the family.
Another instinct is that when Boby comes to ask proposals to Shammy in the barber shop; Shammy along with his friend have humiliated them for their poverty. Shammy at that moment also tries to build up his mask and calls Saji as”Saji Sir” in-order to show his respect and Saji tells to Shammy that he is a gentleman.
There is a possibility to have a good in evil. Even thought Shammy is a male dominator or psychopath he has some element of good in him. He tells to Saji that they can improve their family situation . At that time Boby was job less and
conditions of their house was difficult for a women to stay. Thus Shammy asked them to improve their condition and they will reconsider this proposal.
When Bonny and his girlfriend comes to stay at Baby’s home stay Shammy peekes through the hole . In India it is a common disorder to peek out in others personality. Shammy also does that and shouts out to the guest even-though he peeked at their room. This morality is clearly shown in this film. Then Shammy tells that “I just shooed them away. We should not allow adultery, right?” and he advise to Baby that they don’t need that sort of money.
At every love affair there will be a mandatory advice given by the family. In this film Shammy advice Baby mole and he is trying to put out his individual opinion and thinking on to her. As Baby Mole is educated she is not willing to adjust with Shammy’s values. At that time Shammy tries to compare himself with Boby and tries out to keep himself above Boby. When Simi and Baby mole has gone against Shammy he realises that his mask has been torn off and his real face was been seen. At that point of time the twist have happened. Shammy then accidentally shows his flaws in-front of them. Shammy wanted to become “ideal man” but time didn’t allowed him to. At the climax scene we can see the psyco side of shammy. In between the fight Shammy says that he is the hero or he is the complete man. Shammy also turns to be violent at that point of time. Shammy also have beaten Simi and her family and have tied them under the bed. In this society there are many Shammi’s playing there roles. Women often don’t react to them. They shows their fake love and tries out to suppress women and to get absolute power.
